Cold Weather Window Installation: Silicone, Cleaner & Tool Care Tips

Cold Weather Window Installation: Silicone, Cleaner & Tool Care Tips

As the cold weather sets in, trade installers face tougher jobsite conditions. Cold uPVC frames, damp glass, and stiff silicone sealants can turn standard fitting jobs into hard work.

Whether you’re installing double glazing or retrofitting new seals, keeping your gear working smoothly in low temperatures is key to avoiding costly callbacks. Here are three practical cold weather window installation tips to keep your tools, adhesives, and cleaners performing all season.

1. How to Apply Stiff Silicone & Hybrid Adhesives in Cold Weather

Low site temperatures cause silicone, hybrid sealants, and MS polymers to thicken, making them tough to pump out of the cartridge and harder to tool neatly.

  • The Problem: Cold frame profiles and thick, stubborn sealant lead to hand fatigue, dragging, and uneven, messy beads.
  • The Solution: Keep your cartridges inside the warm van cab rather than in the cold load space prior to use. For thick, cold materials, use a caulking gun with an adjustable drive ratio like the Xpert Dual Pro Skeleton Gun.

The Real-World Fix:

Switch the Xpert Dual Pro to its 20:1 high-viscosity ratio to push thick, cold MS polymers and high-tack adhesives effortlessly without straining your grip. When applying standard silicones, flick it back to 10:1 for fast, low-resistance dispensing.

2. Protecting De-Beading Chisels & Gasket Shears from Winter Wear

Working in winter rain and humidity means hand tools are constantly exposed to damp conditions on site.

  • The Problem: Moisture left on tools overnight causes steel blades to rust and shear pivots to seize up. When you try to cut cold gaskets with stiff, un-oiled shears or de-bead a window with a rusted, dull chisel knife, the blade binds or drags – pinching the rubber gasket instead of slicing it clean, and risking chips on cold uPVC frame profiles.
  • The Solution: Take 30 seconds at the end of every shift to wipe down your hand tools with a clean, dry rag before storing them. Removing site moisture prevents surface rust from setting in overnight, while a drop of oil on moving joints once a week keeps the cutting action smooth.

The Real-World Fix:

For De-Beading: Keep the polished blade of your Xpert 32mm Chisel Knife clean and rust-free so it slides smoothly under tight beads. The heavy steel end cap allows you to tap the blade gently with a nylon hammer to ease stubborn beads out safely without damaging the handle or frame profile.

For Gaskets: Keep your Xpert Mitre / Gasket Shears wiped dry and fitted with a sharp SK5 steel blade. Clean, well-oiled shears slice crisp 45° mitre joints through cold, stiff gasket rubber without pinching, tearing, or leaving gaps for water ingress.

3. Prepping Damp Frames Before Applying Silicone

Rain, frost, and condensation on site create a massive trap for installers when sealing around frames and glass during winter.

  • The Problem: Spraying solvent cleaners directly onto a wet uPVC frame or damp glass creates a wet film that dilutes the cleaner. Applying silicone over a damp surface stops it from adhering properly, leading to seal failure and water ingress callbacks down the line.
  • The Solution: Follow a strict 3-step surface prep routine before squeezing a drop of silicone: Dry first → Clean & Flash Off → Seal.

The Real-World Fix:

  1. Wipe away all standing rain, frost, or surface condensation from the frame profile and glass edge with a clean, dry microfibre cloth.
  2. Apply Xpert Solvent uPVC Cleaner or Glass Cleaner to a separate dry rag to remove grease, dirt, and manufacturing oils. Give the solvent a few extra seconds in cold weather to completely “flash off” (evaporate).
  3. Once the profile is totally dry and clean, apply your Xpert 117 LM Silicone or MS Polymer for a permanent, weather-tight bond that won’t peel away come spring.
